VPC2007: Erratic Mouse Behavior in RC

I've spent several hours testing the RC build of VPC2007 and I'm still experiencing erratic mouse behavior where the mouse seems to "skip" (disappear and reappear during movement). In the beta, this was caused by my Intel Centrino 915 chipset (Dell D810 running Vista Ultimate RTM) and several other symptoms were also prevalent including repeating keystrokes. Now it's only the erratic mouse behavior which is a big improvement over the beta. I've tested this on five different virtual machines and this issue exists on every one, but no two are the same. On vm's created by VPC2004 SP1 and upgraded to the latest vm additions, the problem is very mild. On vm's created by the VPC2007 beta, the problem is so bad it makes the vm unusable. On vm's created by the RC, its usable but very annoying. I'm very surprised that the "degree" of erratic mouse behavior is different on each virtual machine. I've submitted this issue (again) on the MSFT Connect site and am awaiting a response from MSFT.

I'm wondering if this is an isolated issue on my Dell D810 so I'm asking everyone reading this post and testing VPC2007 to post a comment with your experiences. If you have any feedback, please let me know!

Bryan,

I agree. The RTM bits seem to have (finally) fixed this issue once and for all.

I have the erratic mouse problem running VMs created with Virtual PC 6.0.156.0 on a Dell D810 with Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2. I am trying to run 3 VMs. Mouse behavior lags but is acceptable running one VM, but is unacceptable when running 3 VMs. I have 2 Gbytes of RAM. Each VM is allocated 512 Mbytes. Virtual Machine Additions have been installed on all VMs. Performance is set to Prioritize the Active Window. Any help would be apprciated. Brian

Brian,

I have a very similar setup (Dell D810 w/ 2 GB RAM) but running under Vista.

1) Make sure you uninstall and reinstall the RTM virtual machine additions on each virtual machine, especially if you were running the beta or RC bits previously. This helped my performance greatly.

2) Running three virtual machines at the same time, each with 513 MB of system RAM on a 2 GB host machine is going to be very, very difficult in my experience. I'd recommend moving the virtual hard drive files to a fast USB 2.0 external drive to reduce host & vm hard drive contention. It's really helped my over all performance.

3) If you can afford it, look at the new Dell D820 which can use 4 GB RAM. Get the fastest external USB drive you can find with a good size cache.

Hope this helps.

I have a Dell 810 running XP Pro SP2, 756MB RAM as the host. I am having the same erratic mouse problems. It occurs with a single virtual machine running. I just started troubleshooting the problem this afternoon. It's making like difficult as this is my test machine for my 2003 MCSE testing. I have a test on Friday (30Mar) and I really need to run 2003 server virtually. BTW, where do you get the Virtual Machine Additions? Torgo Huntingdon, UK

The RTM version of VPC2007 seems to have fixed this issue for me completely and the download includes the most recent virtual machine additions.

tsimpson@us.fujitsu.com  - we are running Intel chipset  82915PM/GM/GMS, 82910GML HostBridge and are having the erratic and disappearing mouse problem full time.   Has anyone actually solvied the erratic mouse problem they had by any method other than a different machine ?

right now I have 2 developers using the RTM on a Dell D810 with 2GB. Both are experiencing the same mouse skipping issue when using a MOSS2007 VM (requiring 1 GB). One is using Vista, the other XP sp2. Other developers not using a D810 do not have this issue with the same VM. Any ideas? please reply also to edwint _ at_ avanade.com

Here's how I fixed this issue. Install the VPC2004 virtual machine additions. Then uninstall them and install the VPC2007 virtual machine additions. I have no idea why this works but it's solved the erratic mouse issue in nine different virtual machines so far!

I have found a solution that works fairly well to correct the erratic mouse problems in Virtual PC 2007 using the Virtual Machine Additions that came with the install. I downloaded both Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Server 2005 and installed them both on my host operating machine (XPPro SP2). I built my virtual machines (XP Pro & 2003 server) in Virtual PC 2007 but to install the VM Addtions I built a new virtual machine in Virtual Server 2005 and attached to the virtual harddrive already built by Virtual PC 2007 and then added VM additions to the Virtual Machine through Virtual Server 2005. The version of VM additions installed under Virtual PC 2007 is 13.803 and under Virtual Server 2005 is 13.813. My mouse movement is now good on both XP Pro and 2003 Server Virtual Machines.
